Article by Fellow Prisoner of Mandela
The reason I chose to create a letter of one of the prisoners was to give a better insight in Mandela's time in prison and his personality. It kinda gives you information how the people got treated in the prison. Through my research I know that Mandela was mentoring his fellow prisoners to fight for freedom. He taught them to never give up and fight for your rights, but not to use violence to achieve your goals. How the author is describing Mandela in his article is just the way I have seen him in documentaries and movies. He seemed to be wise with a certain power over you. He changed many lives through his words and actions and was a role model for many. The years of Mandela's release and election to president , as well as the name of the prison in the article are real, but all the information about the writer of the text were made up, but matched with my research.
Letter to His Wife
I decided to write this letter by Nelson Mandela to his wife, because I know that he wrote letters to her while he was in jail. According to the sources I read, Mandela was concerned about the safety of his family and his goals to change the South African society and give everybody equal rights. I also know that he had allies and good friends who were helping his family and supported smuggling out letters and political statements by himself, since he was officially allowed to write only one letter each 6 months. Mandela was still hoping in prison for a better future. I important point I included in prison is his realization to stop using violence to reach their goals. He even mentored his fellow prisoners to not use violence, but fight for their rights.
Poster for Mandela's Speech
I choose to create a poster for one of Nelson Mandela's speeches. Through my research I found out that speeches were one of his ways to fight for the freedom of the black minority in South Africa. It also is a non-violent actions, which supports my thesis. The speech I chose was an actual event. It was Mandela's first speech after he got released from prison and date and location are real. Therefore it could have been possible that some of these posters actually existed. The poster would have been created by followers of Mandela, who were encouraging people to join the event and listen to his speech.
Recipe for Freedom Cake
I decided to create a recipe for a Freedom Cake, since it really fits with my topic. I chose the ingredients because of my research. All the different ingredients are things and skills Nelson Mandela used on his long journey to achieve equality and freedom in South Africa. According to how much of it and how you add it into the mixture, it tells you how important it is. The “time” you have to add in step 2 is Mandela’s time in prison; 27 tablespoons standing for 27 years of prison. It was the time when he over thought his violent actions and achieved revelation.
I chose to let the cake bake for 4 hours, since Mandela came out of prison in 1990 and 4 years later he got elected President of South Africa. The temperature of the oven is just the average temperature in South Africa.
There is no violence listed as an ingredient, to show that Mandela used his non-violent actions to achieve his goals and freedom.
All those “ingredients” are things that made it possible for Nelson Mandela and his freedom fighters to set an end to Apartheid in South Africa by using other things than violence.
